Private Label vs. White Label vs. Contract Manufacturing: Which Route Is Right for Your Beard Brand?

Three ways to get products made. Different costs, different levels of control, different amounts of risk. Here's how to pick.

1. The Three Routes, in One Sentence Each

Private Label: You buy finished products and the manufacturer applies your branding. Lowest risk. Lowest minimums. Best for starting out.

White Label: You buy unbranded products and handle labels, design, and sometimes filling yourself. Cheaper per unit. More logistics.

Contract Manufacturing: You commission a completely custom formula and the manufacturer produces it to your specification. Full control. High cost. High minimums.

2. Private Label: The Low-Risk Starting Point

This is what most first-time brand owners should choose, and here's why: the formulas are already developed, tested, and compliant. The products exist. You're not inventing anything — you're branding something that already works.

What you get: Pre-formulated beard oil, wash, or butter. Your brand name, logo, and label design on the bottles. Compliance documentation (CPSRs, ingredient lists) included. The products arrive ready to sell.

Minimum orders: Typically 12-48 units per product. You can test the market with a few hundred pounds rather than a few thousand.

Cost range: £3-£5 per unit at 12-48 unit quantities, depending on the product and fragrance complexity. See our wholesale pricing.

Who it's right for: First-time brand owners. Anyone testing a new market or audience. Barbers who want their own product line without the manufacturing headache. Brands that want to launch quickly — private label turnaround is weeks, not months.

The tradeoff: You don't own a unique formula. Other brands might use the same base product. Your competitive edge has to come from branding, marketing, fragrance selection, and customer experience — not from a proprietary ingredient list.

Our private label service covers everything from label design to compliance. See what's included in the £49.99 Service Package.

3. White Label: More Control, More Work

White label sits between private label and contract manufacturing. The products are pre-made and unbranded. They arrive without labels — or with plain, minimal labels that you replace. You handle the branding and packaging yourself.

What you get: Finished products in plain bottles. You provide the labels (design and print them yourself, or hire a designer). You apply them. Some suppliers fill the bottles for you; others send bulk product and you fill your own.

Minimum orders: Similar to private label — 12-48 units typically. But if you're filling bottles yourself, you might buy product in bulk (litres) and handle smaller batch sizes.

Cost range: Slightly cheaper per unit than private label, because you're doing the branding labour. But factor in label design, printing, and your time. The per-unit saving is often smaller than people expect once they add up the total cost.

Who it suits: Brands with in-house design capability. People who enjoy the hands-on aspect of packaging. Anyone who wants finer control over presentation without the cost of custom formulation.

The tradeoff: You take on logistics. Label application at scale is tedious. Getting labels printed in small quantities is expensive per label. And if you get the compliance labelling wrong, that's on you. White label works well when you know exactly what you're doing — and it's a headache when you don't.

4. Contract Manufacturing: Full Custom, Full Commitment

Contract manufacturing is the serious option. You work with a manufacturer to develop a formula from scratch — your choice of carrier oils, your blend of essential oils, your desired viscosity and absorption profile. It's made exactly how you want it.

It's also expensive, slow, and requires minimum orders that make sense only when you already have customers.

What you get: A unique formula. Full control over every ingredient. The ability to claim "proprietary blend" or "custom formulated." Bragging rights, basically.

Minimum orders: 500+ units per SKU is standard. Some manufacturers will go lower, but the per-unit cost becomes prohibitive below 500. If you're launching with 3 products in 3 fragrances each, you're looking at 4,500+ bottles before you've sold one.

Setup costs: £2,000-£10,000+ for formula development, stability testing, and initial CPSR work. This is before you pay for a single bottle.

Timeline: 3-6 months from initial brief to finished product, assuming nothing goes wrong. It often takes longer.

Who it suits: Established brands expanding into beard care. Well-funded startups. Anyone who has already validated demand and knows exactly what their customers want.

The tradeoff: It's the highest-risk option. You can spend £20K on custom formulations for products that nobody buys. You can also create something genuinely unique that becomes the foundation of a serious brand. It just depends whether you have the funds and the customer base to support it.

5. Cost Comparison with Real Numbers

Here's a rough comparison for launching a 3-product range (oil, wash, butter) in 2 fragrances each — 6 SKUs total:

RouteSetup CostFirst Order (72 units)Time to Market
Private Label£50-£100£250-£3502-4 weeks
White Label£150-£300£200-£3003-6 weeks
Contract Mfg£2,000-£10,000+£500-£1,500+3-6 months

These are ranges, not quotes. Every supplier is different. But the gap between private label and contract manufacturing is real and it's wide. For most people starting out, the numbers point clearly in one direction.

6. How to Decide

Choose Private Label if: You're starting out. You want to test the market. Your budget is under £1,000. You don't have manufacturing experience. You want to launch in weeks, not months.

Choose White Label if: You have label design capability in-house. You enjoy the hands-on side. You need slightly lower per-unit costs and you're willing to trade your time for the saving.

Choose Contract Manufacturing if: You've already validated demand. You have at least £5,000 to invest. Custom formulation is a genuine competitive advantage for your specific market. You can afford to wait 3-6 months for delivery.

If you're reading this and you're not sure — private label is almost certainly the right answer. It's how most successful independent beard care brands started. You can always go custom later. Getting started is the hard part. Don't make it harder than it needs to be.
